KNOW YOUR BENEFITS

Two states. Clear guidance.

A course can help you save and become a safer driver. Here is how the benefits apply in your state.

NYNEW YORK

Insurance & point reduction

Your insurance discount

Eligible principal operators receive a 10% reduction on base liability and collision premiums for three years. Send your certificate to your insurer within 90 days to make the discount retroactive to completion. It does not guarantee a lower total bill.

How the 4-point benefit works

Up to four eligible points count less toward a DMV suspension calculation. Violations remain on your record. The benefit applies to violations within the preceding 18 months and can be used once every 18 months, with no credit for future points.

Your certificate & DMV record

ASI mails the New York certificate. Check your mailing address at enrollment, keep a copy and send it to your insurer. The sponsor reports completion to DMV; allow up to 10 weeks for your record to update.

NJNEW JERSEY

Insurance savings & safer driving

Your insurance discount

Eligible drivers may receive a three-year insurance discount, often around 5%. The amount, covered premiums and effective date depend on your insurer and policy. Ask your agent to confirm the benefit before you enroll.

How the 2-point benefit works

An approved course may reduce two points once every five years, only if points are on your record when you finish. It does not erase convictions or reduce surcharge points. There is no credit against future violations.

Your certificate & MVC record

ASI issues your completion certificate and reports your completion to NJ MVC. MVC advises that providers submit proof within 7–10 business days. Keep your certificate and provide it to your insurance company to request the discount.

Insurance savings and license points are different benefits. Your insurer applies its own eligibility rules. Completing this course does not dismiss a ticket, remove a conviction or automatically restore a suspended license.

Your enrollment checklist

  • Driver’s license details for the correct state; enter your legal name accurately.
  • A working email address, internet connection and compatible device with sound.
  • A current mailing address, especially for New York’s mailed certificate.
  • Your insurer’s confirmation of the discount and any policy requirements.
  • Time to complete every required section and identity check yourself.

Review ASI’s completion deadline and technical requirements at enrollment. For unusual license status or a court requirement, confirm eligibility with ASI before paying.

GOOD QUESTIONS. STRAIGHT ANSWERS.

Frequently asked questions.

Everything you need to choose confidently and understand what happens next.

Is the course completely online?

Yes. Lessons are hosted by American Safety Institute and can be completed online. You do not need to visit Amethyst for a class. ASI handles enrollment, access and course completion.

Do I need to complete all six hours in one sitting?

No. You can pause and return to the course. Complete all required time and activities before the deadline shown in your ASI account. Check those requirements when you register.

Which state and language should I choose?

Choose the state that issued your driver’s license and the language you are most comfortable studying in. NY English, NY Spanish, NJ English and NJ Spanish each have a separate registration link. If you recently moved, ask ASI which course applies before enrolling.

Is a 10% or 5% discount guaranteed on my entire insurance bill?

No. New York’s 10% benefit applies to eligible base liability and collision premiums. New Jersey savings depend on your policy and insurer; around 5% is an estimate. Contact your insurance agent to confirm the eligible coverages, amount and start date.

Will the course remove tickets or clear my driving history?

No. Point reduction is subject to state rules and does not erase violations or convictions. New York allows up to four points for its suspension calculation; New Jersey allows a two-point deduction for eligible drivers. Neither benefit creates a credit for future violations.

Can I take the course if I have no points?

Yes, drivers often take the course for insurance savings and to refresh their skills. You still need to meet the course and insurance requirements. You cannot bank a point reduction for later.

How will I receive my certificate?

ASI issues the official certificate after successful completion. New York certificates must be mailed. For New Jersey, follow the delivery instructions in your ASI account. Check that your contact details are correct and contact ASI if you need help with delivery.

Does ASI automatically apply my insurance discount?

ASI handles state completion reporting. You are responsible for providing your certificate to your insurance carrier and requesting the discount. Keep a copy of the certificate and your submission confirmation.

How often can I repeat the course for benefits?

New York: every three years to maintain the insurance benefit and once every 18 months for eligible point reduction. New Jersey: point reduction is available once every five years; ask your insurer about renewing the three-year insurance discount.

Is this the same as the 5-Hour Pre-Licensing Course?

No. This six-hour course is for defensive driving and eligible insurance or point benefits. New drivers preparing for a New York road test may need the separate 5-Hour Pre-Licensing Course.
